I am now a mother and now that i realize that it was really hard to be a mother, since i am not just a mother but i am also their father. ( i am a single mom)I appreciate all the things that my mom did for me. In a very simple way i learned a lot from her. she always told me that being a mother is not easy. You need to work hard for your kids. and even i am not the best mom in the world i can be the best mom for my kids. Just do the right thing and have faith to god.

Sonia and Judy, thank you for sharing.

I know it was hard for me to write about my Mom - but now that I did - I feel that this special tribute is a wonderful thing.

Your mom sounds a lot like mine, Gina. She also grew up during the Depression.

I didn't have a lot of common sense as a child. My mind was always somewhere else. When I was seven, I walked all the way home from my friend Evie's house, along a busy highway, with my eyes closed. When I proudly told Mama, her eyebrows made a big "V," her mouth a minus sign.

Boy, but I learned lessons from her:

1. Tell your story. Mama was a master storyteller. She kept us spellbound with her tales of growing up, painting so vivid a picture, I felt I was right there. I learned the power of stories and how, if you tell them well, you will be remembered.

2. Consider other viewpoints. As early as five, I remember hearing her say, "Now how do you think your friend feels about what happened to her?" I was learning empathy and how to feel other people's pain, that thing the world's most successful marketers do so well.

3. When you fall, pick yourself up and start over. Perhaps the most important lesson of all. She was teaching me to be self-reliant, to not be afraid of falling, and to get right up after a stumble. As a a small biz owner, I've "scraped my knee" a few times and that reminder to keep going has served me well.

Thanks for giving us this chance to pay tribute to our moms.

My mother, Carmelita, died much too young in January, 2006 of ovarian cancer. As I said at her service (as did my sister), growing up I wasn't all that thrilled to have her as my mom, but as an adult I know I could have asked for no one better. Mom taught me so many things - like never "try" just do, I can do anything I want and set my heart out to do, and to be proud of who I am always. I was touched to learn of how many people my mother touched when she was alive - I had no idea. She cared so much for others that she collected people like others collect stray animals.
I love you mom - I'm happy you're free of pain now and hope you can once again taste and actually swallow all the wonderful foods you were craving in your final months.
