What is the Most Powerful Advertising Technique?

What You May find Most Surprising is Why it’s so Effective…

You’ll be slapping your head for over looking this one. …but you may also notice the uncanny similarity and reason for the popularity of Twitter and Text Messaging.

This Incredibly Powerful Advertising Technique is certainly one that You should include in Your Marketing Arsenal… and it’s available both offline and online.

Curiously though, Most Marketers Never Use It and SHOULD…

What is it?

Textual Advertising, yes Text Ads or Classified Ads.  Look around; you’ll see them everywhere; magazines, weekly ad sheets, restaurant place mats, even weekly Church Updates… and loads of Text Ad Exchanges online.

The earliest text ads first appeared in the mid-1600s in newly published books as want ads for lost properties.  The first Newspaper Classified Ad appeared in the year 1704 in the Boston News-Letter. The ad itself was a solicitation from the paper for advertisers.  They suggested that people could place sales ads listing houses, land, ships, goods, or merchandise in the newspaper for a reasonable rate from twelve pence to five shillings.

This was the beginning of a highly successful advertising concept that spread around the world… and was the source of revenue for many smart marketers.  Classifieds supported and grew the newspaper and magazine industry for these past centuries.

Today this Multi-Billion Dollar concept is still producing offline and online with stellar results.

Why are Text ads so Powerful?

…Because of an unfortunate problem that turned into a very fortunate result…

Due to the cost of the paper, and labor, print ads are like real estate to a newspaper, they are very valuable. Small brief and to the point ads were and are a necessity and that necessity became a very fortunate and unintended accident indeed…

It’s the brevity of the ad that creates the high results.   Yes brevity, the very same reason for the surprising popularity of Twitter and Text Messaging…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that people have a short attention span…  It’s just that most people aren’t willing to give up their time…

It’s been well publicized that an ad only has about 8 seconds to capture a prospects attention or lose them for good.  In reality, you have 3 seconds.  Seeing long ad copy will often drive the prospect away or worse put them to sleep.

However the Real Secret is…

Three Seconds, that’s all you have!

The Real Secret to the Success of Text Ads is the Headline.  It is responsible for, arguably, 80% of your success in the short ad format.

A short, to the point, irresistible Headline can make your prospect rabid with curiosity and begging for more.

Text ads are very targeted ads so the possibility of a higher then average response rate is possible.  To accomplish this it must have their primary keyword or short keyword phrase in a brief compelling message.

A great exercise is to look at the ads placed in PPC or your local newspaper to see what actually gets your attention… the formula will become quite clear to you very quickly.

Why Do Many Internet Marketers Ignore Text Ad Marketing?

SEO and PPC, yep, Google and Pay-Per-Click are the likely culprits here.

Text ads were highly popular as a form of marketing as short as eight years ago, about the time PPC was emerging.  Before Google, Yahoo and MSN became players in the PPC market the per click prices were typically about 1 to 5 cents…

At that time, high Search Engine Ranking was ridiculously easy by applying some rather simple skills.  Most smart marketers could get first page placement and tons of traffic quickly and easily.  This became almost mythical for marketers today…

Sadly those fast, easy and cheap marketing opportunities have now become costly and complicated.  Today the mythical success of SEO and PPC has become an industry in and of themselves.  Eager New Marketers are barraged with offers for expensive and unproven tools and techniques that will magically get those results faster and for less cost!

The allure of SEO and PPC has kept the focus of many marketers away from the many productive, alternative Text Ad Providers.  Quietly though, many marketers are discovering that these lower cost alternative Text Ad Advertising Services are great vehicles for consistent earnings at a far lower cost.

… So, if you’re not using Text Ads, those of us that are want to thank you…  You’re one less Internet Marketer that we have to compete with …

Good article. and just to complete the history lesson, the first outdoor print ad we know of dates back to Pompeii (as I recall, it was a poster for a tavern in another town).

Text works. It gives information, and information sells. Ask Ogilvy.

Very interesting information about textual ads. Perhaps the principles behind this concept are what make Twitter so popular. The difference between the two is understanding how to build concepts through relational marketing rather than tweeting pure ads which are a huge turn off for many people.
